  • Iwate Prefecture

    Geibikei gorge(猊鼻渓)
    Geibikei gorge located in Iwate prefecture is one of the top 100 landscapes of Japan. During winter they will have so-called kotatsu (heated) boat, which you can enjoy a comfortable 90 minutes ride with amazing snowy natural scenery along the way.


    • Access:
      5 minutes walk from Geibikei station of JR Ofunato Line.
      Opening hours:
      Open throughout the year.
      8:30am - 16:30pm (until 15:00pm or 15:30 pm during winter)
      Fee:
      Geibikei gorge boat ride: Adult 1,600 JPY

    Nagano Prefecture

    Jigoku-dani Yaen-koen (地獄谷野猿公園)
    Jigoku-dani Yaen-koen is the only wild monkey park in Japan, where Japanese female and baby monkeys soak in natural hot spring in extremely cold days. Not to mention you need to climb up the hills, however, it is definitely worth the trip and it is entertaining looking at the monkeys interacting with each other.


    • Access:
      Bus: Nagaden bus departs from JR Nagano station East Exit and stop at Kanbayashi Onsen
      Train: get off at Yudanaka station and choose either of the below options:
      Take local bus to Kanbayashi trailhead then walk to the park
      Take the holiday shuttle which goes directly to Jigokudani parking lot. This way is closer to walk from the Kanbayashi, but it is a lot steeper.
      Opening hours:
      In winter (November - March): 9:00am - 16:00pm
      In summer (April - October): 8:30am - 17:00pm
      *Open throughout the year, however, check the homepage for any changes.
      Entrance fee:
      Adult: 800 JPY, annual pass 5,000 JPY
      Child ~ high school student: 400 JPY, annual pass 2,500 JPY

    Gifu prefecture

    Shirakawa-go and Gokayama (白川郷と五箇山)
    Shirakawa-go, which is famous for the traditional Gassho-zukuri farmhouses with some of them are over 250 years old. This place has has been declared as a UNESCO world heritage site in 1995. The steep thatched roofs are specially designed withstand the heavy snow during winter. The stunning views of those farmhouses covered in snow can be seen from the Shiroyama viewpoint.


    • Access:
      Shirakawa-go: Take bus from Takayama-Nohi Bus Centre (approx. 50 minutes, ¥2,470JPY)
      Shiroyama viewpoint: about 20 minutes walk from the village center or by shuttle bus (stops near Wada-ke house)

    Kyoto Prefecture

    Kinkaku-ji, the Golden Pavilion (金閣寺)
    Kyoto’s symbolic Kinkaku-ji capped by snow in winter is definitely a ‘must-see’ when you come to Kyoto in late December and January. You will be stunned by the pure white snow falling on the dignified lacquered temple.


    • *It is estimated in average it starts snowing in Kyoto in late December. However, it varies each year.
      Access:
      Take city Bus 101(departs from stand b2) or city Bus 205 (departs from stand b3)
      Opening hours:
      9:00 am - 5:00 pm (open throughout the year)

    Where to stay?

    Gifu

    Itakura-no-yado Shirokuri

    A traditional Japanese house, which is located in Takayama, near Mount Norikura. It is about 1 hour drive to Shirokawa-go or 2 hours by bus. In here, guests can enjoy sleeping on a Japanese tatami mat room, in a nostalgic wooden house. It is definitely a different experience compare to an ordinary hotel room.

    Guesthouse Misawa is a 200 years old traditional house, which is located close to the Geibi Gorge. Beibi Gorge is one of the 100 landscapes of Japan, where you can enjoy an amazing view on a Kotatsu boat (traditional heating system with a table combined with heater underneath)!

    Guesthouse Kozuenoyuki

    Kozuenoyuki is a laid-back guesthouse in a hot spring town and it is also close to Hakuba ski resort. The rooms are hostel-type rooms with Japanese tatami mats. Meals are included in the room rate and guests get to prepare the meals with the host. It is a great opportunity to practice your Japanese and learn about Japanese cuisine!
